I am having trouble communication using two-way radios. I am using a Radius SP50 and a Kenwood Tk-3200?

Sergio C asked:

I work for a school and am currently having trouble communication with certain members of our staff. It seems our Radius SP50 radios are having trouble communication with the Kenwood TK-3200 radio’s. Can anyone help me?

It depends on what kind of trouble you are having. It would help if you would describe it. There is no reason the Kenwood and the Radius shouldn’t be able to communicate with each other except for some basic situations that aren’t caused by either radio. These situations may be one or more of the following. The radios may not be programmed exactly the same. The construction of the building may interfere with the signal. The people may simply be ignoring the calls on their radio.

Yes you could have mentioned a few details but maybe you won’t have to…I’ll bet that the two radios are being operated too close together…Kenwood has a history of not being not able to two way in the parking lot. Primarily because it’s receiver is a bit too sensitive. Once you get out away from the “shop” Kenwoods do just fine. The Sp50 may not be the best radio Motorola ever made…but it will transmit fifty miles at ten watts to a repeater under the right conditions. And talk with another Sp50 in the same room. Kenwoods are great for armature radio use. How are you using them? There could be other issues…

Motorola SP50 is US product, licensed 1W or 4W UHF or VHF Hand held radio, now discontinued. Has been replaced by new model Motorola CP200 (Equivalent of UK CP040).

Kenwood TK-3200 is again US product, full licensed Hand portable radio (UK equivalent is TK-3202)

To use the radios, the radio user has to keep a full license, given by US radio license office/authority.

Both radios SP50 and TK-3200 have to be in same banding and programmed on the same specification, correct with the license:

Transmit and Receive frequencies same in both radios on same channels
Same CTCSS and/or DCS Codes programmed on same channels
Same channel spacing in both radios: 12.5 or 25 kHz

To check these details, you need to contact your supplier, who’s made the programming.

If all that is correct, then you may find that the communication problem is caused by structure of the building. Radio signal can be trapped if radios are used in environment of thick concrete and steel walls.

If you have problems getting hold of the programmer, we have a technical department who would gladly help where they can.

Hope this helps
