Thinking of getting a two way radio?

two way radio
Groid asked:

I was reading up about them and read somewhere that any unlicensed (PMR446) radio from any brand is compatible with any other PMR446 radio. Does this mean that someone else in the area can pick up your conversations? Or alternatively, will you be pestered by your handset picking up other people? Really not sure how they work at all ! Any recommendations? Cheap as possible please !!
Meant to say - available in UK please

These are very short range radios, realistically about 0.5 - 1km range max. If the radio has no tuning facility (most are either fixed single or multiple channel types, you’ll need to buy a pair. Try e-bay for a starter. But make sure that the two are compatible and that you have batteries and a charger for each. Try Maxon, realistic or similar

Good Luck

I’m in the UK and i own some of these radios and yes you can hear other people and they can hear you but there are some PMR radios with a code function this makes it more difficult for others to earwigg on you but they are a bit more expensive look in a Argos book they have a good selection xxxxxxx

quite a lot of people buy them when they go to florida and split up for a while..in the big parks.. the new radios have a range of 2 miles ish……quite good.
if you get a digital 2 way you will have channels you can select in case someone else is on the same channel just move up or down one.
as for secure …..not too sure. prob not.

PMR -Public Mobile radio. 446 is the freq. range in MHz. Most quality radios will enable the operator to choose from 5 to 10 freq.’s that are burned into the radios microprocessor. Another thing we do is ” lock ” the receiver where it must see 2 things - Correct freq. ( 446.010 MHz for example ) and 2 nd a code. Motorola set the standard in the industry back in the 50’s. There are 32 of them standardized on all radios. So i can have shared users of a freq and give them different ” codes ” and no one will hear the others unless the code matches. It’s more complex than that but I try to simplify for you. E mail me if you need.
